Turku, the European Capital of Culture for 2011, has initiated the world's largest media art and new media competition. The aim of the competition is to highlight and support the growing field of digital media, and to emphasise the significance of social media in interacting with others and forming a sense of community. By intro- ducing Live2011.com we wish to recognize and promote the importance of established annual media art events, such as Prix Ars Electronica and EMAF, whose work over the years and its significance to the field is most central.
The total sum of all the prizes exceeds 140,000 euro. Any work entered in the competition will be presented to the global audience online through the Capital of Culture's Live2011.com site, and live at different media art events and in Turku during the Capital of Culture year. Artists and content producers working in the digital format are invited to enter the competition in eight different categories.
Please note: you can only participate with works published 1st of January 2009 or later!
Here are some examples of the work that is suitable for our quite flexible categories:
-Open: Digital art installations, short films - anything that can be demonstrated or accessed over the Internet, even if the work itself is physical.
-Participative media: The category focuses on interaction between the viewer and the artwork, possibly utilizing technology in its presentation.
-Digital Turku 2011: Experimental, alternative, creative and non-stereotypical audiovisual interpretations of cityspace, like Turku. The work does not have to be from or even involve Turku, but it should rather be something that brings art into the public space.
-Culture 2.0: How to combine art and social media? Application, viral artwork or perhaps a collaborative community art project on the Internet?
-Artistic game: Creative games that rejuvenate the online game genre with their functionality, interactivity or unique, novel approach.
-For whom: Open is a competition category for anyone who is actively involved in creating online media content.
-Type of content acceptable for entry: We are searching for audiovisual experiences that can be shared through the Internet. The theme is open, but the work must not fit any other categories. Your entry work may be, for example, computer animation, an advertisement, a short film, a computer demo or real-time audiovisual work, a music video, a video which has been altered using digital effects, a graphic modelling, etc.
-Evaluation method and criteria: The jury will evaluate the works in accordance with the following criteria: innovation, quality of implementation, originality and aesthetic presentation.
-Timetable: Entries will be accepted until the final submission day on 2 August 2010. The date for the distribution of the prizes will be announced at a later time.
-Prizes: The total sum of the prizes in this category is 20,000 euro. Winner: 10,000 euro; second place: 6,000 euro; third place: 3,500 euro; additional Live2011.com community honourable mention: 500 euro.
-Format: The works must be submitted preferably in HD 1080, HD 720 or either square pixels- or anamorphic PAL -formats.
Depending on the situation, the work can also be delivered in custom resolution. For example, if the work is created by the means of pixel graphics, it is acceptable to submit the work in a considerably smaller resolution.
The work must be delivered as a digital file either through internet, or burned on a digital media (CD, DVD). In other words, for example, dvd-player encoded dvd-disk or a dv-tape are not acceptable delivery formats.
Acceptable file formats are avi, mov, wmv, mp4 or mpg. Any codec can be used, but the artist must be sure that at least the latest VLC-player can play the file without problems.
The work can also be submitted as a real-time software demo, either as an independent client or as a browser window embeddable application (java, actionscript).
All works must be brought out in 16:9 aspect ratio! Other aspect ratios such as 4:3, can be used within the 16:9 frame tough (letterbox).
