The Rijksakademie serves as a laboratory for developing talent on an international level. It focuses on facilitating research and production for talented, emerging professional artists from all over the world. There are approximately fifty studios where resident artists work for a period of two years on research, experiment, projects and production. Large project spaces are available for try-outs, collaborations and presentations.
Residents get support at an artistic, technical and theoretical level. Artists, theoreticians and other advisors meet with residents in individual studio visits. The advisors come from different continents, cultures and generations, offering a diversity of views. This results in a dynamic abundance of links between art practice and society, reflecting the diversity of contemporary art practice.
In addition to artistic and theoretical advice, facilities include extensive technical workshops, a library, artists' documentation and art collections (Expertise Center).
Resident artists pursue all major contemporary visual art disciplines: painting, drawing, photography, print-making, sculpture, video, film, sound and new media. Links with other disciplines such as architecture, music, dance, literature and cinematography are possible.
Each year, out of almost 2000 applicants, around twenty-five artists are invited for a residency period. Primary selection criteria are excellence and possibilities for further development. After finishing their art education, resident artists generally work for three to five years as professional artists. It is a proven fact that at this stage of an artist’s career a residency has the most impact.
The Rijksakademie has fifty-five studios. Annually, approximately half of these become available for new residents. In 2009, twenty-three artists were selected for a residency out of 1900 applications from all over the world. Resident artists have usually successfully completed their (art) studies and have already worked independently as artists for three to five years prior to their application. Experience shows that a residency at the Rijksakademie at this stage of their careers has the greatest impact.
One is initially admitted for a work period of one year (January to December). Whether a second year is considered worthwhile, is decided in mutual consultation.
The selection procedure consists of a number of rounds. Demonstrable artistic quality and development potential are the decisive factors here. Following the first selection rounds in April/May, a number of candidates are invited for an interview in May/June at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. The successful candidates are announced at the beginning of July.
