It was on a trip to China that my son and I saw the first camel parade. I was fascinated by the colorful flags, the Chinese people singing and dancing, and the enormous banners that were hung on poles. The city of Pune at that time had only one Chinese restaurant, one that was mainly a fruit bar. My first impression was that it was a very simple restaurant that served Chinese food along with other Indian and continental dishes. So I entered and sat down opposite the Chinese girl who was the owner and head chef, me. As I ordered, we quickly learned that this was a fast-growing Chinese restaurant that serves authentic Chinese cuisine, Chinese food from the most popular regions in China, from Hangzhou and Sichuan to Fujian and Anhui.
I couldn't help myself as the serving of rice puffs that came out of the kitchen made me gag. The first course we had was fish steamed with vegetables in banana leaves and a red chilli. The smell was aromatic, my throat was dry and it was difficult to talk, but then again, the food was excellent, extremely tasty and gave me my first experience of Chinese food in a foreign country. On the first day of Chinese New Year, when Chinese celebrate the start of the calendar with great joy, this Chinese restaurant in Pune was a special place for me.
I have been to Pune many times and the Chinese food joints there are some of the best I have ever visited anywhere, but on that day there was something different about this Chinese restaurant. There was an atmosphere that one is immediately attracted to, the colours were vibrant, the music was soft and engaging, and there was something about the place which spoke of the vibrancy of the times and their love for food and their heritage. The Chinese New Year is celebrated in Pune since the year 1989, and this was my first experience of Chinese New Year in a foreign land. What I learnt about Pune, in the city of my birth, will stay with me always.
